Vanilla

There is a place at Pinousok that operates vanilla products. Right from the plant to end products such as perfume, cigar and drinks. I was told that vanilla planifolia has the highest commercial value.

Vanilla can be grown indoor or outdoor under shades. It took about 2 years to flowering from 24" vine. It is a labor intensive business as it requires manual pollination as Melipona bee is not available in Malaysia.

Vanilla blossoms have to hand pollinated within 12 hours of opening in order to grow into vanilla pods. Each bunch may have 1-2 blossoms that open in a day and it can go up to 20 days to completely opened all blossoms in a bunch. 5-6 blossoms should be pollinated in a vine per day for quality purpose.

It took about 9 months for the bean to mature and a vine remains productive between 12-14 years.

Vanilla extract is one of vanilla end products.

Every other day, a lady pensioner used to come to my office selling homemade cakes, kocong and rojak noodle. I interviewed her about her business and she answered all my questions gracefully:-

Me: Did u make all these stuffs?
Lady: No, Somebody else did.
Me: Why?
Lady: I have no time to do it.
Me: Do you make money out of it?
Lady: Yeah! Pretty much.
Me: How much per day?
Lady: RM30 - RM60 depending on the quantity supplied to me.
Me: How long does it take to sell all ur stuffs?
Lady: 3 hours during weekdays.
Me: How much do U make out of it in a month?
Lady: RM800 plus
Me: woww!!

HM: Yes, getting busier now.
Me: How many pair(s) can U finish in a day?
HM: 4-8 pairs only
Me: Why so little?
HM: Cant stand sitting all day long.
Me: How long do U spent on doing this every day?

Me: How much do U make in a month (peak season)?
